Free-Mo S Scale

Modules

Modules are the building blocks of a Free-Mo S Scale layout. They are individual sections of track and scenery that can be connected to form a larger layout. Each module is built to a set of standards to ensure compatibility with other modules. This allows modelers to create unique scenes and configurations that can be combined to form a larger, more complex layout.

Modules can vary in size and shape, and can represent any type of scene or location. They can be as simple as a single straight section of track, or as complex as a detailed diorama with multiple tracks, structures, and landscapes. The only requirement is that each module must have a set of endplates matching the standards that allow it to connect to other modules.

Modules are typically built by individual modelers, who can then bring them to meets or shows to connect them with other modules. This collaborative approach allows modelers to share ideas and techniques, and to work together to create large, detailed layouts that would be impossible for a single modeler to build on their own.

Current Free-moS Modelers

Note: This list is accurate as of November 17, 2025.

  • A group of single track modules built by Shane Lambert that represent the Chicago & North Western (CNW) railroad operations in La Crosse, WI around the fall of 1968. This set begins after the CNW crosses the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy (CB&Q) and the Milwaukee Road (MILW) at Grand Crossing.

    • This module will depict the industries served by the Chicago & North Western between where it crossed the Milwaukee Road at Grand Crossing and the downtown yard.

    • This module depicts the Ready Mix Concrete plant that was located off Lang Drive near the La Crosse River.

    • This module is based on the Chicago & North Western yard in downtown La Crosse, WI as it appeared in 1968. The module includes the C&NW Depot, Freight House and team tracks. It is designed as a 20 foot long scene using five 4 foot modules, but could be expanded by adding additional sections in the middle. The prototype used the main line for a switch lead as this yard was a dead end yard.

  • This module group is based on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Zone 3 in La Crosse, WI. It will be built in at least 3 sections to incorporate as much of the area as I can. I hope to start on Phase 1 in early 2025 and have all three zones done by March, 2026. These modules will be built using Tomalco Flex Track and hand-built turnouts made using Fast Tracks jigs.

    • Phase 1 of the build will focus on the area along 2nd Street and feature street running. This module will be 15 feet long in 5 foot sections. This length was chosen to make the sections manageable but also fit the desired track plan. Construction of this phase is set to begin in early 2025.

    • Phase 2 will focus on the area East of Heileman Brewery crossing West Avenue. This module is slightly longer. This phase will be 20 feet long in 5 foot sections. Construction of this phase is set to begin in late 2025.

    • This module represents the G. Heileman Brewery and surrounding industries in La Crosse, WI. The module set will be 24 feet long consisting of eight 4 foot modules. I had to get a little creative with the modules to get the scene to fit, turning 4 modules on the long end.

  • This double track module set includes four 12 foot modules (3x 4 foot sections each) that are designed to work together to create a realistic representation of the Front Street tracks running from Main St. to Chestnut St and feature the large Bay State Milling plant. The double main line will be embedded in the Front St. brick pavement.

    • CNW Freight House
      Future Build

This module represents the freight house that was located on the East side of Main Street. The building was a single-story brick structure with two story office space on the West end and a loading dock with three tracks on the North side. The module features the freight house and the West end of the 2 track switching yard on the North side of the main line. The yard tracks will continue to the end of the module to be picked up on the Peerless Chain module.

    • Peerless Chain
      Future Build

This module represents the Peerless Chain Company located on the South side of the CNW main line. The building was a large brick structure with a loading dock on the North side. The module features the Peerless Chain building and the East end of the 2 track switching yard on the North side of the main line. The yard tracks will continue from the CNW Freight House module.

    • Bay State Milling
      Future Build

This module represents the Bay State Milling Company located on both sides of the CNW main line. There were large storage silos on the South side of the main and the Milling plant on the North, with an elevator between them. Bottsford Lumber had their coal and sand tracks just West of Kansas St. and will connect to the appropriate track on the Bottsford Lumber module.

    • Bottsford Lumber
      Future Build

This module represents the Bottsford Lumber Company located on the South side of the CNW main line as well as their ground spot on the North side. Standard Oil with several storage tanks will be featured North of the main line.
