Module Owner: Shane Lambert

I started in Free-mo with the HO Scale standard and built or purchased a total of 20 modules during a 10 year span. Sadly, as I get older, and younger members take over the HO Scale Free-mo setups running long trains and not operating, I chose to sell all of my modules and exit the HO Scale side of things. I built a large permanent layout in my home in Zimmerman, MN and was working to expand that. Then, in 2023 a job change an a move forced me to tear that down. That was not easy for me to do.

Since moving I have considered building another permanent layout in the 18×45 foot building next to my house. Then I learned that building needed a lot of work to make it suitable for a layout. So I planned to build something small in my heated two car garage. When I shared plans with others, they told me I should make it modular so I could take it to shows and promote S Scale and operations. That sounded good to me, but the lack of a suitable modular standard kept me from getting started. Until January, 2025 when I published my own standard hoping others would adopt it. Either way, I am planning quite a few modules as you can see below. Follow along as I build a fully operational, modular S Scale layout!

C&NW La Crosse Yard

This module is based on the Chicago & North Western yard in downtown La Crosse, WI as it appeared in 1968. The module includes the C&NW Depot, Freight House and team tracks. It is designed as a 20 foot long scene using five 4 foot modules, but could be expanded

Frank Let Fuel

The Frank Let Fuel Module was a quick module I put together to show off the first Free-moS module at a show in March 2026. It is now currently used along with Heileman Brewery module to add length to the West end for switching. It holds 2 tank cars.

Heileman Brewery

This module represents the G. Heileman Brewery and surrounding industries in La Crosse, WI. The module set will be 24 feet long consisting of eight 4 foot modules. I had to get a little creative with the modules to get the scene to fit, turning 4 modules on the long
