The Free-moS module standards have evolved over time to improve compatibility, flexibility, and operational consistency across participating layouts. One significant change is the transition from the original 26-inch double-track end plate standard to a wider 30-inch end plate. This modification provides additional space for double-track configurations while maintaining the organization and appearance that Free-moS modules are known for. The increased width offers designers greater flexibility when constructing modules and helps ensure smoother integration between modules built by different modelers.
Under the previous 26-inch standard, the two mainline tracks were positioned to accommodate the narrower end plate dimensions. As the organization evaluated long-term layout needs and the growing use of double-track mainlines, it became clear that a wider standard would provide better geometry and more consistent track placement. By increasing the end plate width to 30 inches, additional clearance is available around the tracks, creating a more balanced appearance and allowing room for scenery and infrastructure along the right-of-way without compromising operational reliability.
The updated standard now states: “On a double track module, the through route shall placed 3 inches apart at the centerline and centered on the 30 inch endplate. This will place the center line of each main line 13 1/2 inches from the side closest to each main line.” This revised specification establishes a clear and repeatable track location for all new double-track modules. By centering the two tracks on the wider end plate while maintaining the established 3-inch track spacing, the standard ensures consistent module connections and preserves the interoperability that is fundamental to the Free-moS operating concept.
